Interpretation guide:

  A standardised difference below 0.10 is conventionally read as balance.

  The Kruskal-Wallis P value is reported for completeness; with these

  sample sizes it can reach significance on differences too small to

  confound, so the standardised difference is the more informative one.



  Note that this is a test of PRE-EXISTING renal function only. It

  cannot address reduced lactate clearance caused by injury that is

  already underway at the time of measurement, which is not a competing

  explanation but a restatement of the paper's own conclusion.
